On July 11-12, the annual NATO summit took place in Lithuania for the first time in history. Deterrence and Defence, Support for Ukraine, Defense Investment, Strategic Partnerships, Changing Security Challenges, and NATO's United Strength, - these were all key focus points of this summit. Of course, for us, as aviation photography professionals, the most interesting part was the aircraft that brought the participants of this meeting to Vilnius and Kaunas, as well as the equipment for increasing the security of this summit.

Preparation for the summit
The preparations for the summit began long before the summit itself. A few weeks before that, military trapeze planes flew to and from Lithuanian airports like passenger buses on the busiest European routes. The most common of these were the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, the Airbus A400M, and the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. It is also worth noting that several civil aircraft were chartered from airlines around the Europe, to bring the military personnel for the summit for protection purposes! One of these civil aircraft was super rare - Boeing 757-300. The Boeing 757-300 is a stretched version of the popular Boeing 757 airliner, designed to accommodate more passengers and increase its overall capacity. It has a longer fuselage, measuring approximately 54 meters in length, compared to the 47-meter length of the Boeing 757-200, enabling it to seat up to 295 passengers in a typical two-class configuration. The aircraft's extended range capabilities allow it to fly up to 7,600 kilometers, making it suitable for both domestic and international routes. From a transport aircraft perspective, the indispensable workhorse, during the preparation process, was the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. With its distinctive high-wing configuration and four powerful engines, the C-17 is capable of carrying large payloads over long distances. The arrival of the Canadian delegation
The Canadian delegation arrived with an Airbus A310-304 (CC-150 Polaris). Airbus CC-150 Polaris is a multi-role, long-range transport aircraft operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). The CC-150 Polaris is based on the Airbus A310 aircraft and is used for various missions, including strategic airlift, troop transport, medical evacuation, and aerial refueling.

The arrival of the Polish (and Ukrainian???) delegation
As always, the Polish delegation arrived with a Boeing 737. However, there was not one but several of these Boeings at this summit. One of them did not fly from Warsaw but from the city of Rzeszow, which is located right on the Ukrainian border. You don't need to be very ingenuous to understand who flew in that particular plane :) The Polish Air Force operates a fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft for various purposes, including VIP transport and military missions. These aircraft are used to transport government officials, military personnel, and other dignitaries, as well as for logistical and operational support. The arrival of the Turkish delegation
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan chose the Airbus A330-243 Prestige from the large fleet of presidential aircraft for this visit. Airbus A330-243 Prestige, commonly known as "Airbus A330-200 Prestige." Italian transport was more boring - Airbus A319-115X(CJ). It is a corporate jet variant of the Airbus A319, which is part of the Airbus A320 family of narrow-body, twin-engine commercial aircraft. The arrival of the Swedish delegation
The aircraft of the Swedish delegation was even more modest than the Italian one. Swedish Air Force operates the Gulfstream TP 102D, also known as the Gulfstream G550, as a special mission aircraft for various roles, including electronic intelligence (ELINT) and signals intelligence (SIGINT) gathering. The arrival of the Korean delegation
A special guest was the South Korean delegation, which arrived on a Boeing 747-8. It was the largest aircraft arriving at the NATO Summit 2023, surpassing even the legendary Air Force One in its size. Of course, the most anticipated aircraft for most was Air Force One! President of the United States of America Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. arrived with the aircraft with registration number 92-9000 which is obviously Boeing 747-2G4B (VC-25A)! It is the iconic and highly specialized aircraft commonly known as "Air Force One" when the President of the United States is on board. The VC-25A is a modified version of the Boeing 747-200B commercial airliner, specifically designed and equipped to serve as the primary presidential aircraft for official travel and diplomatic missions. The cherry on the cake was the unexpected night arrival of a Boeing E4-B with the United States Secretary of defense on board! The E-4B serves as a mobile command center that can be deployed to ensure continuity of government operations, communication, and leadership in the face of various emergencies. During the entire NATO summit, Lithuanian and allied air force helicopters patrolled over Vilnius, thus ensuring even greater security of the event! Reconnaissance aircraft were also working high in the sky, and their smooth operation was ensured by tankers filling them with fuel in the air!
